A tree count tells you surprisingly little about impact.
Planting is now underway in Northern Ghana, with the first trees going into the ground.
But 100 trees of the wrong species, poorly located or poorly maintained on a farm, can deliver very different outcomes from 100 trees selected as part of a functioning agroforestry system.
Through Nyra, diverse species are being planted for different reasons: carbon storage, biodiversity, food and other productive uses, alongside crops and living hedgerows.
Before planting began, the existing trees on each participating farm were counted to establish a baseline. That gives us a starting point against which changes in tree numbers, survival and environmental impacts can be measured over time.
So the important questions start after the planting count.
What was planted? Where? How many survive? How do they grow? And what changes around them?
Those are the questions Field Notes will return to as these plants establish.
Next: the people and knowledge behind the planting.
